DROP FOOT (or Foot Drop) is the inability to lift the front part of the foot, causing it
to drag when walking and increasing the risk of tripping, often requiring a high-knee
gait to clear the floor. It's a symptom of underlying nerve, muscle, or brain issues,
commonly from nerve injury (like the peroneal nerve), spinal problems (slipped disc,
ALS), or conditions such as stroke, diabetes, or cerebral palsy, and is treated with
physical therapy, braces, or addressing the root cause.
Symptoms
- Dragging toes on the floor when walking
- Lifting the knee higher than usual (steppage gait)
- Foot slapping down on the floor with each step
- Numbness or tingling on the top of the foot
- Curling toes
Common Causes
- Nerve Injury: Most common cause, often affecting the peroneal nerve from sports injuries, surgery (hip/knee), prolonged squatting, or crossing legs.
- Neurological Disorders: Stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
- Spinal Issues: Herniated disc or nerve root compression (L5 nerve root).
- Muscle Conditions: Muscular dystrophy, polio, or spinal muscular atrophy.
- Systemic Diseases: Diabetes (causing peripheral neuropathy).
Treatment & Management
- Physical Therapy: Exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles, improve walking, and nerve stimulation.
- Orthotics: Braces, splints, or foot inserts to support the foot.
- Addressing the Cause: Treating underlying conditions like diabetes or nerve compression.
- Surgery: May be an option in some cases for nerve repair or tendon transfer.
- Lifestyle: Wearing supportive shoes and using assistive devices.
